The Fermanagh Recreational Trust, administered by the Fermanagh Trust is delighted to award a grant to Derrylin Boxing Club towards their work. The club which formed in July 2008 is a voluntary, cross-community, not for profit group.
Their aim is to provide opportunities for the children, young adults and adults in the community, regardless of gender, race, religion, ethnicity, orientation, physical disability or socio-economic background to participate in boxing and physical training in a positive social and mentoring environment.
Frank McManus, Chairman of the Fermanagh Trust said “Derrylin Boxing Club has become a hub for bringing the community together and developing championship level boxers that in turn become role models to inspire other young people in the community to reach their potential (sporting/artistic/educational or otherwise). This funding will help cover vital costs, ensure the community can avail of their services and ensure that the current crop of talent within the club has the opportunity to achieve their sporting potential”.
The club now has 40 registered members aged 8-20 as well as a further 15-20 casual members. There is a broad membership base with members from all sections of the community and backgrounds.
Sean Crowley, Club President said “We currently have 12 championship level boxers capable to winning Ulster, national, even international titles. Thanks to this funding from the Fermanagh Trust we can continue to support our young people as well as kick-starting other initiatives. Derrylin Boxing Club is proud to be more than just a typical boxing club and we will continue to extend our services to the community, beyond teaching the sport”.
In the last year the club’s ‘Boxing-in-the-Community-Programme’ supported a number of schools, community groups and other local causes. Firm links were established and there was very positive feedback from participants and teachers. Of the programmes participants 69% were female, with a number staying on as club members.
