The Investing in Community Leadership Programme recently held a highly successful leadership training and networking session in Derry/Londonderry, tailored for staff and volunteers from the local community and voluntary sector. This bespoke one-day Leadership Course focused on equipping participants with modern leadership techniques essential for fostering collaboration, innovation, and social impact in today’s ever-changing environment.
Participants from a diverse range of local organisations engaged in a comprehensive exploration of leadership concepts, covering everything from understanding key leadership traits to mastering effective communication and establishing trust. The training also addressed the unique challenges faced by leaders in the voluntary sector, particularly when working with volunteers rather than paid staff.
"The type of leadership skills I have and when to use a more directive approach, especially in how I delegate tasks, became clearer to me during this training," remarked one participant. "It was interesting to learn that motivation has three parts and how important it is to discover what motivates others."
Another participant shared, "Learning the importance of personal values, not just for me but for other volunteers, was eye-opening. Understanding that people like to see the end product of their efforts is key when working with volunteers."
The course also delved into team dynamics, with a focus on leadership in training and development. "I came away realising how important it is to have someone take control of the team’s training and development. I also learned the difference between active listening and just listening or reflective listening," a participant added.
The interactive and reflective format of the day allowed participants to think critically about their roles and how best to support and lead volunteers. "It was an excellent training day, very informative and enjoyable," noted another attendee.
Sonya Johnston, Deputy Director of Fermanagh Trust, commented, "The Investing in Community Leadership Programme continues to recognise the distinct challenges leaders in the voluntary and community sectors face. This training session in Derry/Londonderry provided participants with the tools to reflect on their personal leadership styles and effectively engage and motivate volunteers as well as networking and building new connections."
The Investing in Community Leadership Programme, launched in January 2021, plays a crucial role in building the capacity of emerging leaders within the community and voluntary sectors. The programme is delivered by a partnership of organisations based in the West of Northern Ireland, including Fermanagh Trust, Holywell Trust in Derry/Londonderry, and Rural Community Network in Cookstown. It is funded by the National Lottery Community Fund and continues to equip leaders with the skills they need to foster community development and ensure that community voices are heard.
