Fermanagh Young Leaders Embark on Educational Trip to Rome

Two exceptional local young leaders, Danny McNulty and Kristian Cawley, recently returned from a youth exchange trip to Rome. The nine-day exchange was part of an Erasmus Project facilitated by the European Federation of Settlements and coordinated locally by Development Trust NI.

Danny and Kristian were chosen for the opportunity due to their outstanding participation in the Fermanagh Trust’s Young Leaders programme, where they learned about the role of grant-making and the impact of community development. As part of their ongoing progress, the two young men joined 18 other participants from across Europe, to engage in activities, debates, and workshops on themes such as ‘Participation in Democratic Life’, with a focus on building inclusive societies, promoting gender equality, and fostering youth participation.

Reflecting on the experience, Danny McNulty said, “It was an amazing opportunity to network with people from different cultures and backgrounds. The workshops and debates helped us understand how young people can really make a difference in their communities. I’m incredibly grateful to the Fermanagh Trust and Development Trust NI for supporting us and giving us the chance to learn on a global stage.”

Kristian Cawley echoed this sentiment, highlighting the international connections they made. “Meeting people from all over Europe and hearing about the issues they face was eye-opening. We had the chance to hear from community activists and experts on topics like migration, solidarity, and democratic participation. It’s inspired me to bring some of these ideas back to Fermanagh and help make a difference in our local community.”

The youth exchange also included participation in the Sabir Festival from October 10th to 12th, which provided further opportunities for the group to engage with international activists and humanitarian workers from Egypt, Tunisia, Bangladesh and Serbia. The experience was a powerful reminder of the importance of youth engagement in creating inclusive and democratic societies.

This educational experience gave Danny, Kristian, and their fellow participants the chance to build lasting international networks, exchange ideas, and gain insights into pressing global issues. “We’re really grateful for this opportunity,” added Danny. “It was more than just a trip—it was a chance to learn, grow, and see how young people can shape the future.”

With newfound knowledge and motivation, both Danny and Kristian are eager to continue their leadership journey and share the lessons they learned with their peers back home in Fermanagh.
