Fisher Foundation supports international volunteering

   

 

The Fisher Foundation which was set up in 2003 by Fisher Engineering as a permanent memorial to the lives of Mark, Emma and Bertie Fisher who died following a tragic helicopter accident in 2001, has distributed over £300,000 since it was established.

At a special presentation event in Fermanagh House this year’s voluntary overseas grants totalling £20,000 were awarded to 39 local people from 13 organisations including Bertha to Kitui, ANP Networks, Mellon Educate, SERVE, World Gospel Mission, Child Evangelism Fellowship of Ireland, Girlguiding Fermanagh, Development Media Workshop, the Leprosy Mission NI, Livability, Trocaire and the Church Mission Society. The grants will help fund a range of development programmes in 14 different countries.

The presentation event was attended by representatives from each of the organisations receiving grant awards, along with representatives from the Fisher Foundation and Fermanagh Trust which administers the Foundation.

Karen McAlister from Girlguiding Fermanagh explained the work her organisation will be carrying out. “A group of 6 girls from Fermanagh have been elected to participate in a service project this July in Morelos, Mexico. They will work in this extremely poor area with the local children, many of whom have serious illness or physical disabilities, providing non-formal education as well as the opportunity to learn new skills and play in a safe environment. We are very grateful to the Fisher Foundation for their support in our endeavours. It is such a worthy benefit not only to the local community in Mexico but to our Fermanagh girls as well.”

Ernie Fisher, Chairman of the Fisher Foundation said they were delighted to be able to support so many good causes and volunteers working overseas; “13 fantastic organisations involving 39 local volunteers carrying out work in 14 different countries is yet another example of Fermanagh’s rich culture of giving and volunteering to help others. The Fisher Foundation was established with the overall aim of providing much needed financial resources to help organisations and volunteers who give their time to assist so many projects across the world and it is great that we are in a position to support such excellent work taking place. This year’s grants will support a wide range of worthwhile, innovative projects and they will all no doubt make a major contribution. It is a privilege for the Fisher Foundation to be able to support the efforts of these inspiring volunteers helping others across the world and we wish them every success.”
