Seven grant awards from the Fermanagh Recreational Trust

The Fermanagh Recreational Trust continues to support local sporting talent by this year awarding grants to five organisations and two outstanding individuals. The fund administered by the Fermanagh Trust supports the organisation, development and funding of recreational activities and facilities in County Fermanagh with particular emphasis on young people and youth development.

Erne Paddlers will utilise the funding to support their programme of development and participation for people of all abilities, especially targeting schools and underrepresented groups to engage in paddle sport on Lough Erne. Enniskillen Royal Boat Club, who have had a number of recent high profile successes, will use their grant to purchasing a new safety boat.

County Fermanagh Super Cup NI secured funding from the Trust towards hire of pitches, equipment and transport ahead of the 2019 tournament. The cross community organisation has a proud history of offering individuals the chance to represent their county and use sport to embrace positive social change.

Two individual films were awarded by the Trustees. Footballer Micheál Glynn plays for the Northern Ireland U17 team. He will use his grant for travel and equipment costs as he prepares for the UEFA tournament. Rower Ryan Ballantine will use his grant to travel to a training camp in Spain ahead of the U23 World Rowing Championships. His ultimate aim is to compete at the Olympics.

Enniskillen Golf Club are being supported for their programme ‘Kids Into Golf’. This project hopes to provide introductory coaching to approximately 120 school children in Enniskillen. Experienced golfers will be coaching associated techniques and exercises to primary school as an introduction to the game.

Also awarded funding was the George Elliott / Brendan Keogh Youth League Academy, a new and ambitious programme (named after two well respected figures in the sport in this region). The football academy programme, based at the Bawnacre will involve around 200-250 children aged 10-16. As well as training sessions over a 40 week period, the academy will include a summer camp in August. Prior to this programme, children would have had to travel to Lurgan or Cookstown for their nearest academy.

Presenting the awards, James Cooper, Trustee of the Fermanagh Recreational Trust commented “It is a pleasure to award this support to some of Fermanagh’s sporting talent. As ever we are so impressed by the commitment of the young people and in particular the dedication of the volunteers and leaders of these organisations to create new opportunities and improve performance. It is also great to see the highly regarded clubs that we have supported develop ambitious new programmes, making sport more accessible for young people and the wider community.”
